EVENTS

We schedule several types of events

  • Knit and Crochet Circles (K/C Circles)
  • Put Together Events (PTE)
  • Recruitment and Publicity

Knit and Crochet Circles are held every few weeks at the homes of HAP volunteers. Usually around a dozen people assemble to knit, crochet, learn new stitches, catch up with friends or make new friends, learn more about the project, and just have a nice time.  The Circles are held throughout the area, on weekdays and weekends.  To learn more about the time and location of Knit and Crochet Circles near you, join the listserv by e-mailing rectangle6x9@comcast.net

Put Together Events are held every 2 to 3 months at public recreation centers, churches, and private homes.  Hundreds and often thousands of rectangles are laid out on tables and pinned together for volunteers to assemble.  These Events are usually on weekend mornings and extend into the afternoon.  A potluck lunch is shared by all at the completion of a hard day's effort.  We pin together anywhere from 25 to 250 afghans at each event.  Volunteers take home the pinned rectangles to assemble using a single crocjet stitch.  This is the time to exercise your sense of style and flair for colors.  Check out the photos for some excellent examples of completed afghans.  You need not be able to knit or crochet to help at a Put Together Event and lots of volunteers are needed.

We can't continue without volunteers.  Whenever possible, current volunteers attend functions to recruit more people. The functions can be at craft fairs, craft stores, churches, girls scout meetings, and other community events.  Many of you found out about the project this way and recruited your friends. This helps us to ever widen our group and produce more afghans.  To find out more about how you can help, please join the listserv by e-mailing rectangle6x9@comcast.net

Although most events have taken place in Maryland, we have volunteers knitting and crocheting in 49 states, D.C., and 4 other countries   Our volunteers range from students earning service credits to nursing home residents.  No special talent is required to be of help--everyone is welcome.

There are many ways that you can help the Handmade Afghans Project thank those who have been wounded in service to our country.
