|
We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comfort to America’s military men and women wounded in service to our country. The “Handmade Afghans to Thank Our Armed Forces Project” or HAP was started in December 2004 by Deborah Starobin-Armstrong. “Having spent some time in the hospital as a child, I know they can be cold and lonely and since I knit and crochet I also know that afghans can warm the body and soul,” she said. “It seemed a natural combination to start making handmade afghans for those wounded in service to our country.” An all-volunteer organization (including the coordinator), publicity and outreach are made possible through donations. Communication is done primarily by e-mail. Most of the project volunteers heard about HAP by word of mouth or via this website. Volunteers include individuals from senior citizen centers, universities, libraries, churches and synagogues, a number of schools and other organized groups. A thank you letter to HAP from a U.S. Army chaplain noted, “As our nation is at war and her soldiers are deployed across the globe, your contribution to the health and welfare of those who serve our nation and their families is a special gift indeed.” At this time HAP is working at capacity and can not accept new members or rectangles from nonmembers. |
