Why Rectangles?

The idea behind having each handmade afghan constructed of 49  rectangles is to give each wounded service person the feeling of having received good wishes from many people.  Each rectangle represents a person who has taken the time to send thoughts and wishes.  By combining the work of up to 49 people, even someone  who does not know much about knitting or crocheting will see many hands worked on their thank you afghan.

To expand on that theme, each HAP afghan includes a card that lists the first name and last initial of every known volunteer on the project.  The list has almost 700 names right now.  Another way to let each of our HAP afghan recipients know that many people are thinking of them.

Know each of your rectangles is sending a message of hope and thankfulness.
